The Nanticoke Indian Association Inc.’s Services
The NIA's Community Center
Houses our tribal affairs office, which currently provides programs and social services.
• These include a food bank, community dinners, cultural arts and crafts lessons, native drum and dance programs, educational programs, heritage, and cultural activities, youth and seniors’ programs, elder programs, health care services, as well as mental health and domestic violence services.
• Other benefits come with our intergenerational programs. Intergenerational interaction is essential and inherent to our community. Welcoming participants of all ages creates opportunities for native family members and community members to work together, interacting in different ways through participation throughout a program or event.
• These programs and events include our annual Powwow, Heritage Day, Native American Day, Unity Run, Men’s Breakfast, Ladies Luncheon, Seven Generations, and Genealogy program.
The objective of our Nanticoke Indian History & Cultural Awareness Program
• Is to promote respectful and compassionate engagement with Native American history, traditions, values, beliefs, and culture.
• Our educational programs consist of workshops, events, and presentations aimed at interactively educating people on the history and culture of the Nanticoke Tribe.
• These programs cover a variety of engaging topics, including the Nanticoke language, native spirituality, Mother Earth, storytelling, the doctrine of discovery, ancestry and genealogy, traditional native dancing, and native music.
The Nanticoke Indian Museum
We aim to educate a diverse range of individuals and groups throughout the entire state of Delaware and the surrounding states.
• The specific target populations include, but are not limited to, private and public-school systems (K-12) and post-secondary educational institutions such as the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Wilmington University, and Del Tech Community College.
• Additionally, the museum engages with senior centers, state parks, the Lewes Historical Society, the Milton Historical Society, the Millsboro Art League, Beebe Healthcare, visitors, tourists, seniors, and other community groups.
Apart from our tribal community, the population and demographics we serve represent the rich cultural diversity throughout Delaware, particularly in Sussex County, including those who are poor and disadvantaged. We are dedicated to serving and advocating for Delaware's diverse communities, ensuring that everyone feels recognized and appreciated.
